LEJOG DAY 27 OINCH TO FORT AUGUSTUS 70 km, 497 m.

What a doddle! Short, flattish, light winds, no rain, warmish.

Big thrill was seeing boats speed through the hydraulically operated locks and swing bridges of the Caledonian Canal. So much faster than the manually operated, older, smaller locks further south. A medium sized boat (offshore fishing boat converted to organise watching tours?) worked its way through half a dozen or more locks to beat us from top of the locks at Fort William to Fort Augustus.

First 20km was on a ‘B’ road upgraded for log hauling with very little traffic. Next two thirds were on the very busy, mostly no shoulder, ‘A’ road. Not pleasant but generally safe. See yesterday’s notes for drivers in Glencoe. More trucks and coaches in a hurry than previously though.

Got our accomodation rearranged in Moran’s Hostel (independent hostel not part of YHA but similar style) so we are all in one room rather than split between three in a four bunk private room and a single in a 6 bed mixed dorm. Booking for some reason would not let Hillary book us all into the private room even with enough beds available.

Dined in at the hostel, cooked by them. Falafel and couscous for me (vegetables!). Drumstick ice cream, hot chocolate and bed.
