LEJOG DAY 22 LEADHILLS TO FALKIRK, 94 km, 708m

Stiff and a bit sore today. Full breakfast didn’t help much. Wind still blowing, 6o C when we got up, rain less frequent. Left Lead Hills past a lady wild camping with her son, cooking breakfast over a gas burner with the flame blown sideways and looking comfortable. Many thoughts about why you would choose such a desolate place to camp. Poor, unhappy home, saving hotel bills?

Long story – basically downhills in ratcheting rises and falls, into the wind, rugged up against the chill. At least the rain had much reduced

High point of the day was seeing Hillary’s home in Lark Hall on the southern outskirts of Glasgow. Still much the same apparently. (I saw much later that Lark Hall is considered a ‘hard’ town by the Clydesiders; Hillary did well to get out).

.Then a fairly straight run to Long Croft outside Falkirk for Mango’s Hotel. Except we went through Cumbernald new city and lost an hour trying to find a way out. A nice planning idea but designed around having a car to take the motorway to leave town.

One last hill and we were at Mango’s. After some discussion the proprietor let us park the bikes in the ballroom. Mango’s is a basic, modern box of a hotel pub. It’s Thai restaurant does a good trade as it is the only sit down restaurant (that we could see) in this area even though it is a well established if not well off area.

The rooms were sqeezy, and the sleeping arrangements unconventional but we were too tired to care.

Lights out.
