LEJOG DAY 18 Thirlmere to Wetherall. 63 km, 454m.

A secret: While we were eating our late lunch while cowering in a bus shelter from the wind, rain and chilling temperatures I looked down from my roast beef and cheese with Bramston pickle roll at my sodden, CTAWA sock covered feet in my SPG cleated sandals and saw an orthotic inner sole in the left one! But no orthotic in the right one. The horror!

The other inner sole had fallen out of its sandal at the Thirlmere Kings Head Inn and hidden in a cupboard. Attempts to get it posted on to Glasgow have not been successful. Fortunately is the right one which only adjusts for leg length so as long as I walk up hills clockwise I am OK.

Back to the story.

Leave Thirlmere in light rain, ride 17 km to Keswick in sporadic rain, have breakfast in cafe watching other people walking in light rain, get roll for lunch in the light rain. You get the picture.

Ride 50 km to Wetherall outside Carlisle in intermittent rain, increasing wind and dropping temperature.

Rose Castle Raughton Head – apparently fought over frequently by the English and the Scots, still remarkably intact

Make navigation error and end up at Super Sainsburys in the centre of Carlisle instead of skirting Carlisle direct to Wetherall. Shopped for home cooked dinner, over the bridge smack into Carlisle Castle. Very 1100’s Norman edifice. Eventually got onto the correct route to Wetherall.

Carlisle Castle over the river from Sainsburys, Carlisle. Very castle-like.

Hilary scores again!! Very nice Edwardian mansion for the night. We got the ground floor with the conservatory, new kitchen, enormous bedrooms and formal sitting room. Slept well.

Our BnB at Wetherall outside Carlisle, lovely conservatory out the back
