DAY 53 9 AUGUST KAKADU COOINDA RESORT CROCODILE TOURS, ABORIGINAL HISTORY AND ICE CREAMS

Crocodiles can be anywhere in water in the north. Scary.

The title sums it up.

Get up earlier than one would like on a rest day to be able to catch the 8 am boat tour. While queuing to board the flat-bottomed boat an unlucky punter dropped their mobile phone over the rail of the gang plank. Very quickly the guides declared that the phone was a goner, no-one was going to put even an arm into the weedy water to see if they could find the phone. Too many munchies in the water. The guide must be a slow learner, she said that she had lost five of her own phones in the same way over the years.

The boat ride took about two hours. Lots and lots of crocodiles, birds, some interesting botany such as the purple lotus’ is not native but since being introduced by trepang fishers several hundred years ago has been adopted as a totem by the local aborigines so it can’t be eliminated even though it is invasive. And the biggest wild pigs I have ever seen. The pigs and the water buffaloes are culled occasionally when their numbers get too high.

Chris O’B was still packing up when we came back but headed off soon after.

After that it was clothes washing, resting and chillin’.
